what do I need to do before I can start driving?

17 years
Three months before your 17th birthday you can apply for your provisional licence – or as soon as you are 16, if you’re disabled and receiving mobility allowance. Then once you’re 17, you can legally drive a car on public roads in the UK.
provisional driving licence
Before you learn to drive, you must apply for a provisional driving licence. You can apply for your provisional driving licence by completing the DL1 application form which is available from main Post Office branches or MOT test centres.
Check your eyes
Check if you can read a vehicle registration plate from 20.5 metres away (contact lenses and glasses are fine). Perhaps you need to have a check-up at your opticians to make sure.

To prepare for your theory test, the Driver & Vehicle Agency recommends that you study the Highway Code. The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) publishes a wide range of official learning materials. These include books, CD-ROMs and DVDs .You can buy these from high street book stores or online.

Any private practice needs to be with someone at least 21 years old and holding a full, valid licence for at least 3 years.
